Our Week So Far

Sunday was great! It was kids day in big people's church that morning. Evan is on the youth worship team and did a great job. You can see some videos of the morning here. Then, that night was life group at our house. Usually for December we have ham as the main meal, but I suggested let's keep it simple and do soups and chilies. One person said it was going to be 70 degrees (in December!), so I said let's grill and that's what we did. One family had a bunch of meat they wanted used up, so they brought 16 assorted steaks, and several pounds of ground beef for hamburgers; another family brought chicken, and we grilled them all up at our house. I, of course, did something I am notorious for doing with life group--tried out a new recipe. It was yummy!

Monday we went to co-op for a couple of hours. Evan met with his robotics team for the last practice of the semester until we start back up in January. That morning, a friend called to ask if her son could come over for a little bit while she took her daughter to the dentist. We were glad to because he is on the robotics team also, so we just took him with us until his mom got done at the dentist and made it to practice. They had a fun time playing Nerf war until it was lunchtime and then time to leave for robotics. Then that night Roger took both kids to scouts. They both belong to the homeschooling troops which meet at the same church we attend co-op in. Yea! I got a little bit of time to myself.

Tuesday is the day we stay home and catch up on laundry and school. That afternoon, Evan was really tired so I made him take a nap. When he woke up he had a fever. He still has it, but it's never gotten above 100 degrees, thank goodness. He hasn't complained of any other symptoms. A tiny bit of aching, and commented once that his throat was a tiny bit soar, but really he's functional.

Wednesday, is swimming this month at the Y PE class. Evan stayed home for 1 1/2 hours while I took Lauren to the Y and ran to the store while she had class. So glad that we live closer to town now because the Y is only 7 minutes from our house. I'm also glad that Evan is at the age where it doesn't bother him to stay home by himself for a little while. In fact, there are many times when I just need to run somewhere for maybe 30 minutes and he asks to stay home.

Today was another day at home. Evan was supposed to go downtown for 4 hours to help his scout troop set up a women's event taking place at our convention hall, but still has the fever. While he was going to do that, I was going to take Lauren on a field trip to Michael's arts and crafts store with our co-op, and then when Evan was done with his job, we were going to join Lauren's scout troop for a tour of our city's newspaper office. I'm okay we didn't do any of that. It was so nice to be home and lazy today. I did go out for 30 minutes tonight to get the kids and I some shakes from Sonic. A buck crossed my path on the way to town. We haven't been to Sonic in a while, but since our last time there they have put in a drive through which is about time, in my opinion. Then I ran into our local Dillons/KwikShop to get a couple of things including some children's Tylenol. I didn't see any, so I asked the pharmacist about it and she said, "Do you want the brand name?" I told her no, and she said good because it's very hard to find now because the brand Tylenol is doing away with their liquid medicines. Interesting.

Tomorrow Lauren will go to the Y PE class. Even if Evan's fever breaks, I like to follow the rule of not exposing him to others for 24 hours, so he can't attend. Then Lauren has a sleepover birthday party to go to. She told me today that she hopes she doesn't get sick because she will be very sad and cry if she has to miss her friend's party. I hope that doesn't happen too!

Saturday we have no plans. YEA! (Well, besides picking up Lauren from her sleepover, and Roger possible going hunting). The person painting our old house called today and told Roger that as long as the weather holds, he will be putting the paint on Saturday. He has caulked and trimmed. I have to admit I have missed the cooler autumn weather, but am thankful that the weather has been so warm that our house could be painted. However, this weekend the temps are supposed to change. It's predicted Sunday for the high temps to be in the 30s/low 40s and possible snow that night. Oh well...we'll see what happens.

"Mom, I Hate Being Sick!"

Oh boy! Something is going around making people sick. Evan woke me up at 2:00 in the morning Tuesday to tell me he threw up. His bedroom is in the basement and he sleeps on the top of a bunk bed that has a futon underneath. Thank goodness he woke up in time and felt this was going to happen and he made it down from his bunk to his bathroom in time to get most of the junk into the toilet. I was awoken by his flashlight shining in my face. I got out of bed, set up the couch upstairs for him to sleep on for the rest of the night, and got him a trashcan just in case. Then, bless his heart, he told me that he hadn't quite gotten all of the yuck into his toilet, but I could clean it up in the morning. He was just trying to make things easy on me, and I thanked him for that but told him I needed to go clean it up now. After I did that, I went back to bed, and heard him run to the bathroom. Yep, number two. We went back to bed again, and yep, not long after that, third time. Finally, things calmed down until a couple of hours later, but by this time it was just dry heaves because there was nothing left in his stomach. About 8:30 that morning some more dry heaves. He didn't eat or drink anything all day. Around noon I made him go to his room and take a nap. I told Lauren to go upstairs and watch some movies so I could take a nap on the couch downstairs. Evan's was 4 hours long and mine was 3. When Evan woke up, wow he looked and acted like a whole new kid. You could tell he had some energy back. When he woke up Thursday morning, he was 100% normal again.

Last night at 2:30, Lauren woke me up telling me she had just thrown up in her bed! Oh my goodness, talk about a MESS. I stripped her bed and dumped what I could into the toilet then threw everything into the washing machine. She told me that she had gotten some in her hair, but had tried to wash it out before she woke me up, bless her heart. I smelled her hair and whoa--we needed some shampoo. So, we stood at the sink and washed the area of her hair that needed it. Then I set her up on the couch with a trash can, and guess what--number 2 of throwing up. We got her settled down again and she said she could still smell everything. I sniffed around and discovered it was still her hair, though faintly this time. I went and grabbed the baking soda and we headed back to the sink and used that and shampoo to clean her hair again. That did the trick. She was able to sleep until 8:00 but then was experiencing dry heaves. Obviously she was not going to be able to go to the painting class, writing class, and field trip we were taking with Evan's school today, so a call to Roger to ask if he could do that stuff with Evan. Evan had to miss the painting class but Roger was able to get off work in time to go with him to his writing class and field trip. I had to drive Evan up to the school to meet up with Roger and on the way back home, Lauren's body was trying to throw up again, even though there was nothing in her stomach. We got back home, and I discovered I had forgotten to bring something up to the school that Roger needed to give the teacher, so back in the car Lauren and I climb. I had brought along some crackers and told her she could only have 2 to eat. After dropping off our thing at the school, the car dings telling me I need gas. We go do that and on the way home, Lauren's stomach decided to reject the 2 crackers she had eaten. Don't worry, we had brought along something for all that yuck to go into. Right now she is cuddled up watching a movie before I make her go take a nap. I am hoping that she wakes up tomorrow morning feeling 100% again.

It's been a couple of long nights for the kids and I this week. Now, I'm just praying that Roger and I don't get this yuck!

Our Week

A week ago yesterday my Hubby left for Italy! He had to go for work to attend a conference. He got to tour on foot by himself for a couple of days on his own in Rome, and then then take a train to a town close to Venice where he met up with a group of about 30 guys from the different world plants that belong to his company. I am so proud of him for venturing out on his own! I am not sure I would have had the guts to do that. While he was gone, the kids and I really didn't get to talk to him much due to his schedule, our schedule, and the 7 hour time difference. So, we heard all about his sightseeing once he got back home on Friday. He got to see the massive Roman Colosseum, had a 5 hour dinner in a winery, and ate at a castle. I heard next year he gets to go Brazil!

Here on the home front, we had a quiet week. We had our last day of homeschooling co-op on Monday, and then I thought we had scouts that night, but thankfully we skyped with dad before that time and he told us there was no scouts that night, so it was nice to stay home. Tuesday would have been soccer practice, but we decided not to go, which ended up okay because it rained anyways. Wednesday we decided to not go to our Y PE class because I wanted to work on painting the bathroom, and then after we decided that we got a phone call from the Y telling us class had been cancelled, so that worked out for our benefit. Wednesday afternoon we left to go do some shopping before church but then I noticed Evan was hot and not feeling well, so we came home and he had a fever. Thursday I ran into town by myself for a few minutes (yes, the kids are capable of staying home by themselves for a short period of time; they've done it before) and almost got into a car crash as someone tried to cross the street in my path as I was traveling 50 mph. They slammed on their brakes and stopped in the middle of the street as they realized they weren't going to make it, and I had to slam on my brakes and steer off the road to avoid hitting them, but I kept the van out of the ditch and am so thankful there were no other cars behind me that would have rear ended me. I thank God for keeping me safe because it's kind of scary thinking how dangerous it could have been especially when my kids were home by themselves. Friday we stayed home from activities due to Evan's sickness until we had to pick up dad at the airport in the afternoon. Yesterday, we did not go to the soccer game because Evan was still running a high fever--we're talking between 102-103 degrees. Roger took him to the doctor where he got some cough and sinus meds while I took Lauren to a birthday party and then she and I did some shopping. Today I stayed home with Evan while Roger and Lauren went to church. After they returned home, we all took it easy, but did get some house cleaning done. I am happy to report that Evan's fever has been lower--between 100 and 101, he is eating a little more, and had more playful energy. I am hoping he wakes up tomorrow with no fever.

Well, Sickness Has Struck

Yep, we've been able to avoid so much of this yucky, long-lasting sickness everyone else in the world seems to have gotten until today. Both kids woke up with fevers. Evan's has been the highest around 102 and other than tired and only a tiny appetite, he seems okay. However his fever seems the hardest to bring down. Lauren's fever has been around 101 and she has thrown up 3 times today, has had virtually no appetite, but her fever seems more controllable. They both, including me, took 2 hour naps. I've been feeling low in energy the past few days, and I think I've been suffering from allergies with all of nature starting to bud and bloom, but from my dead-tired, hard hitting nap I took, I think I'll keep an eye on myself in case I'm starting to get sick vs. it being allergies.

I posted on facebook today a funny/sarcastic message to people: I would like to thank everyone who has checked up on us this week (and there were quite a few) by asking if our family has been sick yet this season and then shocked when I've answered no. I think you all had ulterior motives and jinxed us--both kids woke up with fevers today and one has already thrown up. This could be a long day....

I wasn't kidding--so many people this past week asked me if we had been sick yet, and then preceded to tell me how their family members had been sick. It does kind of feel like we were jinxed. Roger is getting off early and going grocery shopping for me (which is what I was planning on doing with the kids today), so I'm very appreciative of that. I'm praying very hard that this will be short-lived because we were supposed to have a busy weekend.
